Tongue & Type
To be an immigrant is to be displaced in body and mind.
The experience–a rebirth–as an inhabitant of a new land begins and ends in the fluency of language. Without it, it becomes impossible to fully integrate or find the roots needed to comfortably survive.
In pursuing questions connected to the purpose of glyphs and accent marks in language, my work spotlights the deeply dimensional relationship between communication & cultural experience. Using the Lithuanian & English languages supported by form, color, ornamentation, and prose, I investigate just how fundamental letterforms are to the broader experience of understanding a culture outside of your own.
The poster series layers elements of type, language, color, and illustration in order to recreate the physical experience of engaging with a foreign (in this case, Lithuanian) culture. The book documents all of the design experiments that have led me, piece by piece, to my final work.
